Non-Extraction Protrusion Correction
Advanced biomechanical distalization correcting protruding lips and teeth without sacrificing healthy premolars.
Non-Extraction Protrusion Correction
For decades, patients presenting with bimaxillary protrusion ("buck teeth" or protruding mouth) were routinely told that 4 premolars must be extracted to pull the lips back. At Lime Tree Dental Hospital, orthodontic director Dr. Minji Kang specializes in Non-Extraction Protrusion Correction, utilizing micro-screw anchorage (Temporary Anchorage Devices / TADs) to retract the dental arch while preserving your natural dentition.
By utilizing the retro-molar space and expanding narrow arches, we retract the front teeth, optimize the nasolabial angle, and establish a balanced aesthetic profile (E-line).
How Non-Extraction Retraction Works
- Mini-Screw TADs (Temporary Anchorage Devices): Micro-titanium screws temporarily placed into the cortical bone provide stationary skeletal anchors. This allows the entire dental arch to be moved backward (molar distalization) by several millimeters without unwanted movement of back teeth.
- Interproximal Enamel Reduction (IPR): Sub-millimeter biological contouring of enamel margins creates millimeters of cumulative arch space safely.
- Lip Incompetence Relief: By retroclining protruding incisors, patients can comfortably close their lips without mentalis muscle strain.
Benefits of the Non-Extraction Philosophy
- Preservation of Living Teeth: Avoids sacrificing four healthy, functional premolars.
- Prevents Over-Retraction & "Sunken" Aging: Excessive premolar extraction can cause a hollow, prematurely aged facial profile. Non-extraction ensures youthful lip fullness.
- Shorter Overall Treatment Duration: Eliminates the lengthy 1–2 year process of closing large extraction gaps.
